Types of Greenhouse Gases:
In the atmosphere, greenhouse gases take place
(i) Naturally or (ii) From human activities.
The most plentiful greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide. It reaches the atmosphere due to respiration of animals, volcanic eruptions, burning and decay of organic matter like plants. Generally carbon-dioxide is eliminated by the plants by photosynthesis. Carbon-dioxide is also absorbed in ocean water. Though humans by their actions raise the discharge of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. These activities comprise solid wastes, burning of fossil fuels, wood and wood products to drive vehicles, produce electricity and so on. At the same time due to deforestation, the number of trees obtainable to absorb carbon-dioxide via photosynthesis has been significantly decreased.
Human actions have caused carbon-dioxide to be discharged to the atmosphere at rates quicker than that at which earth’s natural processes can recycle this gas. There were around 281 molecules of carbon-dioxide per million molecules of air (that is, parts per million or ppm) in the year 1750. Nowadays atmospheric carbon-dioxide concentrations are 368 ppm, a 31percent raise.
Methane entraps 20 times more heat than carbon-dioxide. It is emitted throughout the production and transport of coal, natural gas and oil. It is also released from rotting organic waste in sand fills, by cows as a byproduct of digestion. Since 1750, the quantity of methane in the environment has more than doubled.
Nitrous Oxide entraps 300 times more heat than carbon-dioxide. Burning fossil fuels and ploughing farm soils discharges nitrous oxide. Since 1750 its level raised by 17 percent. Hydrocarbons produced from the manufacture of foams, coolants like chlorofluorocarbons employed in refrigerators are the other gases answerable for global warming.
In the year 2000, scientists discovered an alarming raise in the level of a new gas termed as trifluoromethyl sulphur penta fluoride. Even although the gas is rare, it entraps more efficiently than all other greenhouse gases. The saddest portion of it is that the industrial source of the gas is not yet recognized.
