  Floral Symmetry

Floral Symmetry:

The size, shape, and arrangement of floral appendages (that is, corolla, calyx, androecium and gynoecium) about the axis of a flower are termed as floral symmetry. The axis to which the flower is joined is termed as mother axis. The side of flower in the direction of mother axis is termed as posterior side and the side away from it is termed as anterior side.

On the basis of floral symmetry there might be given three situations of a flower:

i. Actinomorphic:

The flower with radial symmetry, that is, the portions of each whorl are identical in size and shape. The flower can be classified into two equivalent halves along more than one median longitudinal plane, example: Solanum, Hibiscus, and so on.

ii. Zygomorphic:

The flower with bilateral symmetry that is the portions of one or more whorls are different.  The flower can be classified into two equivalent halves in only one vertical plane, example: Pisum.

iii. Asymmetric:

The flower that can’t be splitted into two equivalent halves all along any vertical plane, example: Canna.
