I thought this was a fun exercise because as I reflected on what I do each day, every action is the result of a decision. One decision I make each day is whether to take my lunch break at a typical lunchtime or power through my work when I am focused on a big task and take a late lunch. Sometimes I will tell myself that I will take a lunch break when I am done with my task because I do not want to break my focus. By the time I finish, I am cranky and very hungry. In this situation, I feel like a novice because I get too caught up in the task and underestimate how much my mood and energy are affected without a real break. According to Goldstein and Hale (2026), novices usually have less efficient strategies compared to experts and are more influenced by immediate demands in the environment, which can make decision-making hard under pressure.
Another decision I make daily is whether to pack a lunch or buy something at work or at a restaurant. I would consider myself a novice here too because even though I know packing a lunch is usually a smarter choice, I do not always do it. Even though packing a lunch can save me money and is often a healthier option, if I am running late in the morning and do not have time to prepare anything, I opt not to pack a lunch due to stress and not wanting to be late for work.
Finally, I decide what time to leave my work building so I do not get stuck in heavy traffic. I would say that I am an expert when it comes to this decision because I have had enough experience to recognize traffic patterns and am pretty good at adjusting my timing before traffic starts to stall. Goldstein and Hale (2026) state that experts often use experience-based strategies and are more efficient in how they approach decisions.
