Problem:
It is very important to consider the multicultural and pluralistic characteristics of our society as future counselors in training. Heritage, attitudes, beliefs, understandings and acculturative experiences that our clients have, give them a different lens to view the world from. These same experiences shape us as counselors as well and if not managed appropriately can negatively affect the dynamics of counseling relationships. In order to navigate diverse cultural backgrounds within our practice it is important to first practice culture humility by not making any assumptions based on our observations of a client and their race, gender or culture. We need to be aware that some marginalized or oppressed groups may come into the counseling relationship unsure or distrustful of the relationship. Being intentional about cultural awareness and acknowledging cultural dynamics and values can help gain trust and strengthen the therapeutic relationship (Thompson & Jenal, 1994). It is also important as a counselor to utilize regular self-reflection to discover hidden bias that may affect how we approach the helping process. Need Assignment Help?
