Ways to disentangle your identity from your past trauma

Problem:

As a student how would you respond to this classmate of yours, include in-text citation and references from 2021 below and ask questions

The client begins the video with an understanding that their lived experiences are so much a part of their story that they ascribe feelings of lesser value and lowered sense of self-worth. Trauma, shame, and guilt are intertwined for the client. The counselor and client work together to separate lived experiences from sense of self, showing the importance of acknowledging pain while fostering hope (Egan & Reese, 2019). The counselor and client work together to identify themes of resilience and strength in the client's life, giving a new lens of endurance and hope going into the future and reshaping the client's view of self.

Counselor: Thank you for your bravery in sharing your story with me. I can hear in your voice that you have been carrying hurt about your experiences for a long time. I can hear sadness and some hopelessness in the way you talk about your story. Can you tell me more about what emotions you are feeling in this moment?

Client: Hopelessness is a good way to describe it. I have gotten to used to feeling broken and hurt that it is hard to imagine feeling hopeful about a future where I don't feel these things anymore and don't feel defined by my life up until this point.

Counselor: It sounds like the trauma you experienced has defined not only your circumstances but also impacted your view of self. I am hearing that you are grieving the way your life could have been different if your circumstances had been different. Does that sound right?

Client: Yes. I don't know how to move forward or see a bright future.

Counselor: That sounds painful. Sometimes when people feel such deep levels of pain, they wonder if their life is worth continuing. Have you had any similar thoughts?

Client: Honestly, yes. Sometimes I wish it would all just stop. I want to be a whole person and not feel like just a collection of everything that has happened to me.

Counselor: What I'm hearing is that you want relief from the pain, but not necessarily for your life to end. Is that correct?

Client: Yes. I want to believe there is a future where I can be happy and not feel like I'm a prisoner to my past.

Counselor Summary: What I'm hearing is that you are looking for ways to disentangle your identity from your past trauma so that you can begin to heal and move forward meaningfully. I also hear that you want to believe you can get there, which means you are willing to work to make it to that point. I see that willingness even in just being willing to come in here today and talk with me about that hope. My goal is to continue to identify and connect with meaningful reasons to do so moving forward so that we can start to make sense of what happened to you, while focusing on the reasons you fought to get through it and the purpose and hope in what you have ahead of you.
