Problem:
The lower-case words were displayed in Arial black font, sized 24, against a white backdrop in both displays for the prime and probe. Similarly, the upper-case words were displayed using the Arial 20-point bold font against a white backdrop in both prime and probedisplays. The variance in font size and boldness was included to ensure similarity between lower-case and upper-case words in the height and thickness of the lines. Finally, without interfering with the lower-case ascenders and descenders, the distractor and target words were shown near each other. During 50% of the trials, prime displays were consistently positioned in the vertical middle of the screen and were correspondingly commonly 70 pixels to the left or 70 pixels to the right of the middle during the remaining trials. Manipulations of competition for selection were introduced to elicit negative prime effects which renders the target word selection, making the target word selection a greater challenge compared to the distractor.
