Problem:
In each of the above, please reflect on (1) the inner obstacles of which you are aware that (perhaps) bring up some difficulty for you in all or any of these areas, and (2) your thoughts on whether and how increasing the capacity for Central Capability could help to strengthen your engagement of difference. Being scapegoated: In one of my university projects, there had been friction regarding a missed deadline and workload distribution. Instead of focusing on structural problems, the group kept blaming me slowly, positioning me as being unresponsive. This oversimplified story put the group at ease but left me alone and disoriented. I experienced shame and doubted my ability, and this shows how scapegoating affects individual and group performance. Scapegoating another: I publicly criticized another student in a leadership committee with which I shared the same year for being unprepared. My anger was verbal and obvious. As I realized afterward, I was merely transferring my own fear of not seeming effective to someone whose approach to work was not the same as mine. My anxiety was un-loosened momentarily by the scapegoating, at the cost of trust. 1- Suppressing difference: I am moderately strong at noticing difference, but stress can lead me to suppress awareness. 2- Repressing difference: I am weaker here; uncomfortable differences sometimes fade from conscious awareness. 3- Trivializing difference: I occasionally minimize differences to preserve harmony.
