Process for studying behavior and mental processes

Problem: The scientific method is a structured way of thinking that provides psychologists with a process for studying behavior and mental processes. The first step begins with forming a research question, which is the basis of what the study is going to focus on. The second step is forming a hypothesis, which needs to be testable by means of the study. Third is collecting data through observation or experimentation. Next is analyzing the results, and then sharing the findings so others can replicate the study. The scientific method was implemented in research in order to have a systematic, objective, and evidence-based approach rather than a personal opinion. Two research methods discussed in chapter 2 are descriptive research and experimental research. Descriptive research focuses on observing and describing behavior without manipulating variables. Experimental research involves manipulating an independent variable to see how it affects a dependent variable. Comparing the two, experimental research allows for a cause-and-effect approach/study by manipulating variables, rather than just observing and describing behavior. Descriptive research allows the study of behavior to be more natural rather being involved in the study, which can cause personal bias. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
