Problem:
Analyze and give a respond
The category of social engineers I chose is a phisher, or someone who attempts to manipulate a person into revealing confidential information through emails, social media, and text messaging. One effective tactic that phishers utilize is mimicking reputable organizations and businesses to obtain personal information such as SSN or credit card numbers through attempted urgent emails. They understand to target the most vulnerable group of people which is usually the elderly as they are less prone to understanding what is and isn't a valid urgent email from a bank or an ISP.
I have personally dealt with this having previously worked for Comcast and having an influx of elderly customers receiving emails imitating us promoting a new cheaper plan and asked them to login with their credentials and provide credit card information to process the "upgrade". Fortunately, most of those customers came into the store and questioned us about how to do so because they weren't tech savvy enough on their own at home. We informed management of the constant problems that we faced over the next few months and every time it happened we would go over basic protocol of how to identify if it's a real or fake email. All the emails that were presented to us had only 1 flaw which was a misspelling in the email address that was difficult to notice at first glance. We were mostly successful despite a few customers falling for the scam which we had to break the bad news to and offered to show them how to prevent it going forward. Need Assignment Help?
