This isn't just an online annoyance because it shows up in school counseling offices, pediatric clinics, and families that are stretched thin by the emotional toll. The causes are layered. Developmentally, adolescents are wired for peer feedback and risk-taking, and platforms capitalize on that through features that maximize engagement like endless scroll, notifications, and public metrics. Exposure to cyberbullying, appearance-focused content, and misinformation can intensify social comparison and sleep disruption, both of which are linked to poor mental health. At the same time, many families and schools lack the time, training, or resources to monitor online environments or to provide early support, so problems snowball. The consequences are serious: higher rates of depressive symptoms, emergency department visits for self-harm, and reported loneliness, with disproportionate impacts on girls and LGBTQ+ youth.
