Contributing to increasing trauma for vulnerable individuals

Problem:

Historically, the correctional environment has been one of intimidation, further contributing to increasing trauma for vulnerable individuals, exacerbating mental health disorders, and promoting self-medication (Leidenfrost & Antonius, 2020). A new trend within the correctional environment is to create a holistic approach, one that includes trauma-informed care and practice (TICP) for incarcerated women (Jewekes et al., 2019). Beyond the benefits of trauma-informed approaches, the implementation of gender-informed strategies is also crucial in the correctional environment. These strategies recognize the unique experiences and needs of women, ensuring that interventions and support systems are tailored to address the specific challenges they face. This alignment is essential for fostering rehabilitation and reducing recidivism among incarcerated women." (Jewkes et al., 2019). Trauma-informed treatment interventions within the correctional facility focus on two primary goals: (a) to decrease psychiatric symptoms associated with trauma, mental health, and substance use, and (b) to reduce recidivism when incarcerated women transition back into the community (Jewkes et al., 2019). Fifty percent of incarcerated women not only meet the criteria for PTSD, MDD, Anxiety, and anxiety disorder, but they also often meet the criteria for borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, and dysthymia (Konecky & Lynch, 2019).
