I chose the article "Overestimation in the Aggregation of Emotional Intensity of Social Media Content" from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (2026) for this discussion. The study was done by Jonas Paul Schone, Mathew D Rocklage, Brian Parkinson, and Amit Goldenberg who are affiliated with universities like Stanford, Oxford, and Harvard. The researchers wanted to see how people judge emotions in social media posts especially when looking at multiple posts at once instead of just one. In the study they looked at looked at groups of social media posts and rated how emotionally intense they thought the posts were overall. The results showed that people overestimate how emotional the content actually is when they see a bunch of posts together. Basically when emotional content is grouped it can make situations seem more dramatic than they really are. I thought this was interesting because it honestly explains a lot about how social media works. When people scroll through a lot of emotional posts it can easily shape how they feel about a situation. If this study were reviewed by an Institutional Review Board on concern would be making sure participants fully understand what they are agreeing to before participating. Another concern would be protecting their privacy and making sure their responses stay stay anonymous. Since the study involved emotional content, researchers would also need to be careful that the material doesn't cause unnecessary stress.
