Discussion about the lgbtq+ community

Problem:

In response to your peers, address any major similarities or differences between the beliefs and biases of the subculture you chose (goth) with those that your peers chose.

The subculture I chose to speak about would be the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, & queer or questioning individuals). I chose this subculture, as I identify with one of the orientations & I'm a strong ally. Being a part of the LGBTQ+ allows people to express their orientation by being themselves. LGBTQ+ communities "represent a wide range of identities & lived experiences" (HPU, 2025). Growing up I familiarize myself with some of the orientations; throughout the years more have become more acceptable. To me love was/is love; "it did not matter which gender or sexual orientation you define with" (HPU, 2025). I believe everyone should be with who they want to be without judgment.

Cultural beliefs within this subculture stem from inclusivity, diversity, authenticity, etc. This has created the space for "non-binary beliefs, fluid self-expressions & traditions that go against the norm" (Guptaa, 2023). The LGBTQ+ community brings people together, creating a safe space. As for the biases, there are many prejudices within this subculture. Some examples are "thinking that a "normal" family is ideally just a man/woman" (Eng, J. 2021). When same-sex couples (speaking on all orientations) have had kids, it has been done before & the kids have been fine. It becomes "normal" to them because they're getting the same fundamentals as any other kid with heterosexual parents. Another example would be that there's always "an assumption that gay/bisexual people are promiscuous" (Eng, J. 2021).

Typically, the norms in society that are more "acceptable" fall under "cisnormativity & heteronormativity." Most people believe it should just be "man/woman." The LGBTQ+ community normally is seen as the "forced concept". However, cis/hetero orientations can easily be argued as the true focused belief. "Many youth expect their futures to be heteronormative & learn to reinforce heteronormativity through social experiences" (Pollitt et al., 2021). Throughout this post I stated obvious taboos seen from this subculture, but here are a couple more: "Public displays of affection, engaging in conversations about LGBTQ+ issues, & meeting others within the LGBTQ+ community are not ok & so much more-unfortunately" (UC Berkeley, 2018).
