Problem:
My intervention focuses on improving early detection of severe preeclampsia in pregnant people. One social barrier that may occur is the belief that headaches, swelling, blurry vision, and stomach pain are normal parts of pregnancy. This belief may cause people to ignore symptoms and wait too long to get medical care (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2024). To better understand this issue, I would talk with pregnant people, families, and community health workers to learn more. Their ideas would help me teach people about serious warning signs and where to find care. An individual barrier, such as misinformation, can become worse when family members ignore symptoms or do not trust their doctors. This lack of support may delay blood pressure checks and treatment. It can also cause others in the community to believe the symptoms are not that serious. Because these problems are connected, the intervention should educate pregnant people, include families, and involve community health workers.
