Employee Reviews are a critical part of ensuring an organization is maintaining standards, delivering results and also retaining and investing in the right people. Employee reviews should be timely, to ensure feedback is relevant and has adequate time to be addressed properly, but more importantly reviews should be actionable and useful to both the employee and the supervisor. I favor a collaborative approach, and have seen very good results in my professional career - although I have also experienced terrible examples as well, and have incorporated the lessons learned as well. Milestone and calendar periodicity is less important in my view. Record keeping and accountability are important however, so the structure of the "official" reviews would be quarterly with the final quarter being both a wrap-up for the previous year and a look ahead to the next. The actual timing of more frequent, less formal reviews/discussions should be based on the current project/workload, and the focus is on collaborating to create clear actionable goals for the employees to meet or at least work towards.
