Identifying criminal characteristics for human service

Problem:

Respond to classmate discussion question in 80 words. Not all characteristics will fit each person involved in the criminal system but most often criminal characteristics that are found include previous and/or current mental health issues, lack of familial support, impulsivity, antisocial behaviors, criminal associates, lack of education and substance use.

Understanding and identifying criminal characteristics for human service practitioners does not constitute criminal profiling, as the understanding of the characteristics is for the purpose of applying sanctions in place to combat the negative criminogenic needs. I believe understanding each individual's criminal characteristics is an integral part of building a strong foundation to assist in reducing these criminal characteristics. I can speak from personal experience, as a juvenile probation officer, I use a tool to identify my client's criminal characteristics for the purpose of creating attainable goals, referring to pro-social programs, and target the needs to reduce their risks.

I can also identify on the other hand where it can be concerning to those individuals who are part of the justice system to feel they are being profiled and potentially discriminated against. It all comes down to how the information is disseminated and used for the purpose of assisting the individuals in progressing to a better position in their lives. Need Assignment Help?
