"As a special education teacher, I understand that there are factors that can affect student learning and that academics are only one part of the picture. In my work with students with autism and emotional disturbance, I have learned that trauma, anxiety, sensory input needs, and difficulty with emotional regulation can strongly affect how a student performs in school. One misconception I have had at times, especially when teaching general education, was thinking that when a student does not complete work, they are being lazy or refusing on purpose. Over time, I have learned that many students are not trying to be defiant. Instead, they may feel overwhelmed, unsafe, or unsure of how to cope with the demand. Another preconception I have had is believing that progress should always be steady if I am providing effective instruction. However, the reality is that students with trauma backgrounds may make progress one week and struggle the next, depending on what is happening outside of school.

This reflection reminds me that supporting students means teaching skills while also helping them feel safe, calm, and accepted. As teachers, when we meet their emotional needs first, students are more prepared and able to learn." Need Assignment Help?
