Development of the direct observation

Problem:

Create a response to this college discussion post: The records review process provides a crucial basis for comprehending the person's past and present needs when performing functional assessments. This is because the indirect assessment provides valuable context that assists with the development of the direct observation and/or interventions that follow.

Two documentations I would prioritize requesting for are (1) previous behavioral evaluations & (2) medical records.

(1) Previous evaluations would provide me useful historical perspective on the client's behaviors. Within the past evaluations, I would be able to identify trends that may not be immediately noticeable during brief observation times. This would be beneficial in which we would avoid repeating ineffective approaches and giving me something to develop from.

(2) Medical records would give me an insight on whether or not there are any physiological influences on the client's behaviors. When analyzing the clients' behaviors, it is essential to differentiate between those that have been sustained by environmental factors and those that result from gaps in medical care.

I would practice cultural humility in my work by acknowledging that I am no connoisseur of their culture, instead they are the experts. I would actively listen to the families and allow them to Interpret the behaviors without imposing my own personal views. Cultures have different views and meanings of behaviors. For instance, in the western culture we find eye contact to be important and a sign of active listening, but other cultures interpret eye contact has a sign of disrespect to authority.
