To obtain a diverse literature review, the researcher needs to read a plethora of articles and books. Due to the volume of references that will populate during the search, researchers must take a broad look at the material by skimming and speed reading to determine if it is relevant. If the researcher determines the material is sufficient, they can then gut the article or book to weed out irrelevant sources (Thomas, 2021).

Scope

Scoping happens near the beginning of the search with the prima facie question. Then the researcher focuses on relevant core articles, begins mindmapping process, refines the question if needed, and then finally prepares to draw the storyboard. Following these steps allows the researcher to remain aligned yet flexible (Thomas, 2021).

Search

The researcher needs to find relevant articles and books through various means. To assist in formulating a good list of references, the researcher's search strategy can include databases like Google Scholar, the university library, or artificial intelligence tools (Thomas, 2021). Thomas (2021) notes that keeping the sources organized aids the researcher in the screening and selection process.

Structure

Different structures can help shape and organize the sources into categories. The researcher may utilize thematic, funnelled, chronological, comparison-based, or mixed structure to connect thoughts in an organized manner (Thomas, 2021).

Synthesize

Synthesizing is a framework that's guided by a theory or from literature. The goal is to actively search for conflicting interpretations, weaving the findings into a narrative (Thomas, 2021). Tables, figures, diagrams, or matrices are useful to illustrate the findings (Juntunen &Lehenkari, 2021).

Literature Review Phase

A leader's behavior is determined based on their leadership style. Studies suggest that leadership style can impact employees' morale. Transactional leadership style has been shown to hinder employees' morale (Masenya & Ngoepe, 2025). Yet, authoritarian leadership style shows both positive and negative influences on employees' morale (Chen et al., 2020).
