Respond to this discussion
For this discussion, I chose the American Cancer Society as the not-for-profit organization for my course project. The American Cancer Society is a large 501(c)(3) charitable organization focused on cancer research, patient support services, advocacy, and public education. Based on the organization's size, national reach, and publicly available governance information, I believe it operates under a governing board structure that combines both advisory and managerial responsibilities. According to the textbook, this type of structure is common in larger not-for-profit organizations because the board helps guide the organization's mission, oversees financial accountability, establishes strategic priorities, and ensures compliance with legal and ethical standards. I selected this structure because the American Cancer Society has a formal board of directors, executive leadership, and multiple operational programs that require coordinated oversight and decision making.
I believe this board structure is effective because it supports accountability, organizational stability, and long-term strategic planning. Large not-for-profit organizations often manage significant funding sources, partnerships, and community programs, which requires experienced leadership and clear governance responsibilities. A governing board with both advisory and managerial functions can provide expertise in areas such as healthcare, finance, fundraising, and public policy while still maintaining focus on the organization's mission. This structure also helps the organization respond to external pressures, such as donor expectations, healthcare policy changes, and community needs. In contrast, a smaller volunteer-led structure may not provide the same level of oversight or specialized kwledge needed for a national organization with complex operations like the American Cancer Society.
