The mucosa lining the respiratory, alimentary, genitourinary and other lumina and surfaces are continuously exposed to many antigens. These regions are endowed with a prosperous collection of lymphoid cells, either specific aggregates as the Peyer’s patches or scattered isolated lymphoid follicles – collectively termed as the Mucosa associated lymphoid tissues (i.e., MALT).

These lymphoid tissues in the gut are termed as Gut associated lymphoid tissue (i.e., GALT) and those in the respiratory tract are termed as Bronchus associated lymphoid tissue (BALT). MALT has lymphoid cells and also phagocytic cells. Both B and T cells are existed. The mucosa is endowed with secretory IgA.
