Muscles:

Muscles are resilient in nature. They are able to contract in response to stimulus from the central nervous system. The muscle cells function similar to biological machines which convert chemical energy into mechanical work. The mechanical work includes different movements involving vital processes such as contraction of the heart and blood vessels. Around 40% of the body is skeletal muscle and approximately 10% is smooth and cardiac muscles.

Structure of a skeletal muscle:

A striated muscle is composed of numerous fibers arranged in bundles. The diameter of   each fiber differs from 10 to 100 microns. The length of fibres ranges from 1-20mm. Each fiber is surrounded by a membrane, termed as sarcolemma.

Each muscle fibres are made of 4 to 20 thread-like structures termed as myofibrils. They are parallel to each other. The myofibrils are 1 - 3 micron in diameter. In between the myofibrils, the sarcoplasm is there. A small segment of the myofibril is termed as the sarcomere.
