Clotting of Blood or Haemostasis

Clotting of Blood or Haemostasis:

Whenever a blood vessel is damaged, it outcomes in coagulation or clotting of blood. The blood clot is a network of thread similar to protein fibers, termed as fibrin, which traps blood cells, platelets and fluid.

The clotting based on various proteins in the plasma. They are termed as coagulation factors. Generally these factors are in an inactive state. After damage they are activated to generate a clot. The activation can occur in three phases.

Stage 1:

Formation of thrombokinase:

Damaged tissues discharge a mixture of lipoproteins and phospholipids termed as tissue factor (TF) or thromboplastin. This factor in the presence of certain factors in the blood form a complex termed as prothrombinase or thrombokinase.

Stage 2:

Formation of thrombin:

During this phase soluble plasma protein prothrombin is transformed into the enzyme thrombin by prothrombinase. Prothrombin synthesis in liver needs vitamin K.

Stage 3:

The soluble plasma protein fibrinogen is transformed to insoluble protein, fibrin by thrombin

The fibrin forms the tough network of the clot.
