In cerebral cortex, the left hemisphere is joined to the skin receptors in the right half of the body. It too controls the muscles on the right side of the body.

The right hemisphere is joined to the sensory receptors on the left half of the body. In addition, it controls muscles on the left side. Both the hemispheres are also joined to the eyes. The sensory nerve tracts of the left eye are joined to the right hemisphere and the right eye to the left hemisphere via the optic chiasma. Therefore the left half sees the right half of the world while the right half sees only the left half of the globe.

The left and right hemispheres swap information via a set of axons termed as the corpus callosum, and also via anterior commissure and hippocampal commissure. The two hemispheres have their own particular functions and the above division of functions or labor among the two hemispheres is termed as ‘lateralization’.

The corpus callosum allows the right and left half of the brain to operate cooperatively, rather than independently. The anterior commissure plays a significant role in unifying the emotional responses of two sides of the brain. Damage to the corpus callosum obstructs the exchange of information among the two hemispheres.

The left brain is concerned with number skills, language, reasoning, spoken language, technical skills and right hand control. The right brain is concerned with art consciousness, imagination, emotions, visual functions, music awareness, 3D forms and left hand controls. The left brain is meant for analytical tasks whereas the right brain is for innovative tasks.
