Introduction to The Information Domain
All software applications can be collectively called data processing where software is built to process data and to transform data one form to another i.e., to accept input, manipulate it in some way and produce output. This statement is true for all systems like embedded systems, payroll system etc. Additionally, the software also processes events. An event is defined to represent some aspect of system control and is really nothing more than Boolean data on /off true /false.
This first operational analysis principle requires an examination of the information Doman and the creation of a data model. The information domain contains three different views of the data and control as each is processed by a computer program.
Information Content and Their Relationships (Data Model)
Information Flow
Information Structure
1. Information Content: represents the individual data and control object that are the part of some large collection of information transformed by the software. Data and control objects can be related to other data and control objects by links and create a data models
2. Information Flow: represents the manner in which data and control changes as each move through a system as shown in fig 3.7.
Input objects are transformed into intermediate information which is further transformed in to output. Along this transformation path (or paths), additional information may be included from an existing data store (memory buffer). The transformation applied to the data is function or sub functions that a program must perform. Data and control that move between two transformations (functions) define that interface for each function.
3. Information structure: represents the format or layout of various data and control items. The following questions must be answered by an assessment of information structure.
1. Are data or control items to be organized as a dimensional table or as a hierarchical tree structure?
2. Whithin the context of the structure, what information is related to other information?
3. Is all information contained within a single structure or distinct structure to be used?
4. How does information in one information structure relate to information in another structure?
