Sulphur cycle:
The cyclic movements of Sulphur among the living organisms and the environment are termed as Sulphur cycle. Sulphur is an important element for all living organisms. It is existed in free and also combined states. Plant, animal and microbial proteins, amino acids cystine and methionine have sulphur. In soil, it takes place both in organic (i.e., sulphur amino acids, vitamins, and so on) and also in the inorganic form (i.e., Sulphur and sulfates) and is readily metabolized. Four different transformations are recognized; these are:
(A) Decomposition of bigger organic Sulphur compounds into smaller units and their version into inorganic compounds (i.e., mineralization),
(B) Microbial related immobilization,
(C) Oxidation of organic ions and compounds like sulphides, thio-sulphates & sulphur,
(D) Reduction of sulphates into sulphides.
