Classification of Streptococcus Pyogenes:

The genus streptococcus consist significant human pathogens and commensals of mucous membranes. The genus comprises approximately 40 species. It is divided in six groups depend on pathogenicity and other characteristics:

(1) The pyogenic group has significant species which are human and animal pathogens such as Str.agalactiae, Str.pyogenes, and Str.equisimilis.

(2) The mitis group has commensals of the human oral cavity and pharynx. Str.pneumoniae belonging to this class is a pathogen.

(3) The anginosus group has Str.anginosus that is existed as normal flora of oral cavity of man.

(4) The salivarius class forms portion of normal flora of oral cavity of man which comprises Str.salivarius.

(5) The bovis group is existed in the colon of man.

(6) The mutans class colonizes the tooth surfaces of man and animals. These are included in the growth of dental caries.

Lancefield grouping:

Based on the main antigenic differences in the polysaccharide of Streptococci, Rebecca Lancefield introduced a serological categorization of streptococci. The polysaccharide is termed as group polysaccharide and identifies various groups of streptococci, designated as Lancefield group A,B,C,D and so on.
