The antimicrobial action of alcohol is due to its de-naturation of proteins, solubilization of lipids of cell membrane and by the dehydration of cells. Absolute alcohol (i.e., free from water) is ineffective against dry cells since of its poor penetrating ability than its aqueous solutions.
