Serological precipitin tests are employed to distinguish between eumycetoma and actionomycetoma and also to recognize the specific organisms. However they are of little value for diagnosis in routine usage.

Treatment:

Eumycetoma does not respond to chemotherapy and radical surgery is generally essential. For cutaneous form treatment with potassium iodide is satisfactory. In disseminated disease intravenous amphotericin B is needed.

Epidemiology and Control:

Organisms generating mycetoma take place in soil and on vegetation. Barefoot farm laborers are mainly exposed. Proper cleaning of wounds and wearing shoes are logical control measures.
