Introduction to Hand winding

For this method, four numbers of slot feeders are laced in the two selected slot at a distance from the coil pitch.

The needed numbers of turns are wound into the slots; that is slots Nos. 1 and 4 as in below diagram. Sufficient tension is applied on the wire to build a tight winding without breaking the wire.

A loop is finished at the end of the first coil and the starting of the second coil. The second coil is started in the selected slot and the coil is wound with similar number of turns like in coil 1. The span of coil 2 has to be equivalent to that of coil 1. While the second coil is finished, a loop is made once more and after that the third coil is started. In this way the winding is continued, until every coil has been wound. The last lead of the last coil is connected to the starting lead of the first coil. After the complete armature is wound, there will be 2 coil sides in every slot, in double layer winding. It has to be made sure that all the coils have similar pitch and turns. The loops that is made at the end of the coils will look like displayed in the below diagram, and have to be connected to the commutator raisers. The process of making loops when winding, described here, is for simplex lap winding. This technique is generally adopted for small armatures. For wave winding and multiplex windings, connection for raisers shall be taken from the coil ends as per to the winding pattern.
