Introduction to Function Generator:

The function generator is an instrument that generates dissimilar type of the wave forms which are sine, square and triangular.

1. The frequency control is employed to regulate two current sources namely,

  • Upper current source
  • Lower current source

2. The upper current source supplies current to an Integrator. The output voltage of integrator then increases changing the linearity with time. If the current, changing the capacity decreases or increases the slope of the output voltage decreases or increases correspondingly.

3. The voltage comparator multivibrator circuits alter the state of the network. This change in state, the upper is separated and the lower is 'ON'. The voltage comparator multivibrator stage is altering the condition of the network by switching 'OFF' the lower current and switch 'ON' the upper current source.

4. Different kinds of waveforms:

  • The output voltage of integrator has a triangular waveform that supplies through upper and lower current source.
  • To get square wave the output of the integrator is passed by comparator.
  • The sine wave is imitative from triangular wave. The triangular wave is synchronized into sine wave by using diode resistance network.

5. Amplifiers:

The two output amplifiers provide two simultaneous individually selected outputs of any of the wave form functions.

6. Features of function generator:

  • The frequency range is approximately 0.01 HZ to 100 KHZ.
  • It can provide several wave forms like sine wave; saw tooth wave, triangular wave and square wave.
  • The accuracy is within ±1% in low frequency range.
