Types of Epistasis

Types of Epistasis:

There are two pairs of self-governing non-allelic genes affecting a single trait. The suppression of the gene on one locus of a chromosome by the gene existed at some other locus is termed as epistasis meaning "standing over". The gene that is suppressed is termed as hypostatic and the other is epistatic or inhibiting gene that is also termed as the suppressing gene.

Epistasis can be of the given types:

1. Due to recessive gene:

The Recessive gene masks the consequence of dominant gene B.

2. Due to dominant gene:

Dominant gene A masks the consequence of the dominant gene B. Except this, the word epistasis refers to all non-allelic interactions including a pair of genes. Thus epistasis might be accountable for the production of numerous modified dihybrid ratios as shown below:

A. Duplicate recessive epistasis (i.e., 9:7)
B. Recessive epistasis (i.e., 9:3:4)
C. Dominant epistasis (i.e., 12:3:1)
D. Dominant recessive epistasis (i.e., 13:3)
E. Duplicate dominant epistasis (i.e., 15:1)
