Theories of Translocation

Theories of Translocation:

The plants absorb minerals from the soil and translocate them to other portions of the body. Minerals are absorbed in the form of soil solution enclosed in the pore spaces between the soil particles and the root hair. The soil solution has the mineral salts in the dissolved state. Numerous theories have been put forth to elucidate the mechanism of translocation of mineral salts. Such theories can be positioned under two headings:

(A) Passive absorption:

  • Mass flow
  • Ion exchange
  • Donnan equillibrium

(B) Active Absorption

  • Carrier concept
  • Cytochrome pump Hypothesis
