Cysticercosis

Cysticercosis:

Eggs passed in the faeces when ingested by cattle, pig or man, the intermediary hosts, the eggs develop into larval (i.e., cysticercus) phases.

This disease is referred as cysticercosis. Human to human transmission takes place in the following ways:

1. Autoinfection of humans can take place with T. solium eggs transmitted directly from anus to mouth.

2. Transmission can take place between individuals via contaminated food or hands.

3. Interior autoinfection whereby gravid proglottids enter the stomach through vomiting or reverse peristalsis can too take place.

4. Humans most generally become infected like pigs via the ingestion of T. solium eggs contaminating the atmosphere that is, drinking water contaminated with poorly treated sewage or eating vegetables fertilized with raw sewage.

T. solium cysticerci build up in muscle tissues and show some symptoms. The cysts can take place in the eye. Most generally the cysts are present in vitreous humor and sub-retina and the inflammatory response can lead to retinal detachment and blindness. The myocardial cysticercosis often takes places in massive infections. Participation of central nervous system can cause serious clinical disease resultant from either an inflammatory response or an obstacle.

Treatment:

Niclosamide and praziquantel are efficient for human taeniasis. Praziquantel has the benefit in that it effectively eliminates the scolex and causes destruction of strobila without discharge of gravid proglottids. It is also efficient in human cysticercosis.

Control:

Eradication might be attained in beef and pork via mandatory and enhanced surveillance procedures at slaughter. Eradication is attempted in humans via screening and drug therapy. Eventually, by enhancements in sanitary and economic conditions and in public health learning the disease can be controlled.
