Primary wall:
It is the initial formed wall of the cell that is generated internal to the middle lamella. It is elastic, thin and extensible in growing cells. This is optically active (i.e., anisotropic). It expands by addition of more wall material in the existing one. Such a growth is referred as intussusception. Some cells such as parenchymatous cells and meristematic cells contain only the primary wall. The primary wall includes of a loose network of cellulose microfibrils embedded in a gel-like matrix or ground substances. In many plants the micro fibrils build up of cellulose. The micro fibrils are oriented variously according to the thickness and shape of the wall. The matrix of the primary wall in which the micro fibrils are embedded is mostly composed of water, pectin, hemi-cellulose and glycoprotein. Pectin is a filling material of the matrix. Hemi-cellulose binds the microfibrils with matrix and the glycoprotein control the orientation of the microfibrils.
