The hypophysis is classified into two parts: the adenohypophysis or anterior hypophysis, and the neurohypophysis or posterior hypophysis. In adenohypophysis, two hormones which act directly, the growth hormone (or GH) and the prolactin, and four tropic hormones, that is, hormones which regulate other endocrine glands, the adrenocorticotropic hormone (or ACTH), the thyroid-stimulating hormone (or TSH), the luteinizing hormone (or LH) and the follicle-stimulating hormone (or FSH) are generated.

The neurohypohysis stores and liberates two hormones generated in the oxytocin, hypothalamus, and the antidiuretic hormone (ADH, or vasopressin).
