Meninges are the membranes which cover and protect the central nervous system (CNS). Cerebrospinal fluid refers to the fluid which separates the three layers which form the meninges and it performs the functions of the nutrient transport, mechanical protection, and defense for CNS. The cerebrospinal fluid fills and also protects the cavities of brain and spinal cord.
