Structure of Maize Grain

Structure of Maize Grain:

The maize grain can be taken as an illustration of monocotyledon seed. The maize grain is a small one-seeded fruit termed as the caryopsis. In maize grain the seed coat (i.e., testa) is fused with the fruit wall pericarp. Outwardly the maize grain is yellow in color and somewhat triangular in shape. On one side of the grain is an opaque, small, oval and whitish region in which embryo lies embedded.

A longitudinal segment of the seed exhibits the structures as illustrated below:

  • Seed coat
  • Endosperm
  • Embryo
