Write significant points about ableism

Problem:

One of the most significant points about ableism discussed in this week's readings is that it is deeply embedded in social structures and everyday norms rather than limited to individual prejudice. Ableism assumes that being non-disabled is the standard, which leads to environments and systems that exclude people with disabilities (Levi, 2006). Another important point is how language and media portrayals reinforce ableist beliefs by depicting people with disabilities as helpless, inspirational solely because of their disability, or as problems that need to be fixed. These portrayals contribute to stereotypes that minimize the full humanity and capabilities of individuals with disabilities (Oxford University Press, n.d.). Persons with disabilities are often targets of stigma and stereotypes because disability is frequently misunderstood and framed negatively within society. Stigma develops when differences are labeled as undesirable, which can lead to discrimination and social exclusion (Stigma, Social Issues, Values, n.d.). Many people focus on perceived limitations rather than social barriers, reinforcing assumptions that individuals with disabilities are dependent or less capable. Education can help reduce stigma by increasing awareness of the social model of disability and emphasizing that barriers are often created by inaccessible environments and attitudes rather than by disability itself. Inclusive education and accurate representation can help challenge misconceptions. Need Assignment Help?
