Why the leg extension is more effective


Problem: A fellow exercise scientist has heard that a leg extension exercise (which involves only extension of the knee joint whilst in a sitting position) is more effective at targeting the rectus femoris than a lunge. This student is confused as they assumed rectus femoris, being a multi-joint muscle would be best targeted by a multi-joint exercise. Explain to them why the leg extension is more effective in the above situation compared to the lunge.
