Why should you be compassionate

Problem: Compassionate - Why should you be compassionate? I should be compassionate because jail is stressful, isolating, and controlling. People in prison are often dealing with anxiety, fear, and stress so being understanding and empathetic are important in helping the individual feel safe and calm. Compassion helps to create a safe place and a trusting bond, which is important in giving support and motivation. Attentive - Describe ways to be attentive? I can be attentive by listening to the incarcerated individuals' worries and stories. Having the individual being heard and listened to can help their path of recovery and to lend support. Listening can also involve changes in behavior or small non-verbal body language. Sometimes individuals are uncomfortable or fearful of outright telling you how they are feeling so paying attention to one's body language or facial expressions. Responsive - How will you respond? Will you do something? I can be responsive by helping the individual advocate for themselves and for me to advocate for them. This can involve helping them report unsafe or uncomfortable situations inside the jail to staff or administrations. Or encouraging them to join groups and programs that can teach them different coping mechanisms or to help with their mental health. Eclectic - one thing you could do is encouragthe individual to join cognitive-behavioral therapy. A lot of the research and data that I saw was mostly about cognitive-behavioral therapy.
