Why nasw states social workers obtain informed consent

Problem:

Respond agree to this- The NASW (2021) states social workers must obtain informed consent and protect clients from unnecessary harm. If clients were to find out they were part of a study they did not agree to, they may feel taken advantage of. Rubin (2020) mentions that risk can exist in program evaluations, however ethical practice requires minimizing risks and ensuring any benefits clearly outweigh any harm. For example, as a social work intern at a school site, I have facilitated small groups to help student improve conflict resolution. Risk can exist because some student may feel uncomfortable sharing personal experiences in a group setting. To minimize risk, I must obtain parent permission, and explain to students that participation in the group is voluntary. It is also important that I explain all of this to both students and parents in a way that they understand. I have established clear group rules about confidentiality and respect to help student feel safe. The benefits of participating in group are tools to manage conflict, build new friendships, and improve social-emotional skills, the potential benefits possibly outweigh the risks involved.
