How self-conceptualization can be complicated


Problem:

During adolescence, self-concept takes into account personal views of the self, while also framing those views in a broader context and differentiating them from others' perspectives (Feldman, 2023). Self-conceptualization can be complicated, as ideals, hopes, and wishes for the self don't always align with the reality of the self. Self-esteem is whether or not you can like the reality of yourself, even if it doesn't look like the idealized version you envisioned. Feldman (2023) describes adolescent self-esteem as multifaceted. On the one hand, a teen can have high self-esteem in one area of their life but poor self-esteem in others.

My own adolescence was shaped by a variety of influences, each contributing to different facets of my self-concept and self-esteem. My family played a central role, guiding me in gender roles and instilling values rooted in faith, which shaped my understanding of how I should behave in the public regardless of peer pressure. At the same time, my peers introduced me to "cool kid" fashion and music trends, shaping my taste in clothing and jewelry, which, was not always in alignment with the trends. Teachers and my guidance counselor, in turn, helped shape my academic self-concept, encouraging me in subjects that came more easily and offering support in areas where I needed extra help.

Popular culture also played a significant part. As a fan of Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, I spent hours practicing their dance routines from videos like "Rhythm Nation" and "Thriller." The praise I received from family and friends for these efforts were deeply affirming, leading me to believe, I was a good dancer and my family deciding to invest in my participation in dance classes and choir. These experiences not only nurtured my talents, but also protected me from social isolation. When I entered high school, my being introverted, a bit awkward in social settings, and a "church girl" coupled with my interests in anime and science fiction socially designated me in the geek category ripe for being picked on, but my singing and dancing abilities eventually helped me gain acceptance. Becoming co-captain of the Stepper team and joining our award-winning choir provided a sense of belonging and purpose, showing how diverse influences during adolescence can shape and strengthen self-concept over time.
