Why is it important to be able to see the forest and trees

Problem

Into the Wild Chapters 7 and 8: Chris as an Agent of Change?

In describing Chris, Krakauer writes, "Many who knew him have commented, unbidden, that he seemed to have difficulty seeing the trees, as it were, for the forest" (p. 63). In order to bring about meaningful and lasting change, why is it important to be able to see both "the forest" and "the trees"? For that matter, what does this expression really mean anyway?
