Why drug use has significantly increased among young people

Problem:

Include information with above texts: In the region, drug use has significantly increased among young people, with about 86% between the ages of 15 and 44 and 75% between the ages of 10 and 29 seeking treatment (WENDU, 2023). Another compelling revelation was that students accounted for 61.8% of those seeking treatment (WENDU, 2023). Additionally, 53% completed secondary school, 12% completed primary school, and 35% never attended school (WENDU, 2023). This data suggests a significant prevalence of substance abuse among adolescents and young adults, and that education plays a complex role in substance use. However, there is not enough qualitative research aimed at understanding the underlying factors that contribute to substance use among those who dropped out of school (Kyei- Gyamfi et al., 2024). The majority of drug treatment services are paid for by family or friends. According to the West African Epidemiology Network on Drug Use from 2014 to 2017, around 75% of individuals went for treatment for substance use disorders, and in 2023, it slightly increased to approximately 77.4% in West Africa, paid for by family and friends (WENDU, 2019; Saba et al., 2021). Furthermore, medical insurance accounted for only about 0.7% of the funding for these treatments (WENDU, 2019; Saba et al., 2021). Another study conducted in Nigeria showed that 40% of high-risk drug users seeking treatment could not access care because they could not afford it (UNODC, 2019). Need Assignment Help?
