Effective leadership can occur when the appropriate traits and skills are utilized and three being discussed here are: being an effective communicator, having the ability to deal with conflict, and finally, being a trusted leader (Northouse, 2016). Effective communication is complex because individuals receive information in their own unique way, so it is important to recognize what approach is required for each person. Listening to what is being relayed back by the responder when he or she send a message is crucial. A leader must have insight, ability to determine what has been spoken by decoding what each person has said through verbal and non-verbal cues. Awareness is a way to evaluate if the follower is envisioning what is required of him or her, is supportive of the tasks he or she will be assigned and feels he or she can fulfill duties. Also, a leader must make it clear that when a follower has an issue that can and must be brought to his or her attention. And, that a solution to the problem, and implementation and execution of the plan will be determined. When other adjustments are required, they will be identified, addressed, and resolved quickly to keep activities progressing (Duck, 2011).

As individuals carry out their assignments, conflicts will arise, and an effective leader must have the ability to demonstrate conflict resolution by first identifying the issues, then establishing resolutions to problems, and developing several strategies for resolving concerns. They must have other possible solutions to implement in the event a solution results in other conflicts or could impedes progress for meeting outcomes. Followers must know their thoughts and feelings are being considered and that compromise is expected of everyone at one point or another. A leader will emphasize that ideas or suggestions are not lost to the group or team, that their opinions are valuable and may be more appropriate for other situations; proper conflict resolution can be a win-win (Davidson & Wood, 2004).

When a follower is assured his or her ideas or suggestions will be used in the appropriate situations, the leader must follow through at some time with incorporating those opinions into some activities to resolve issues or to complete tasks. Staff want to be recognized and to follow the direction of the leader, so he or she must be trustworthy. When followers experience reliable leader, they will become more responsible and dependable. If the leader's behavior is consistent the trust will grow, and the group will become stronger; more cohesive. Followers will gain trust and honor by being reliable and responsible, that in turn, will be reflected through their care for patients and customers within the health care organization (Johnstone, 2013).

An example of how important utilizing traits and skills in communicating, dealing with conflict, and being trustworthy is when the Edward Memorial Hospital in Washington failed to provide adequate services. They eroded the trust of stakeholders, patients, and the community. They were sighted for "misdiagnoses, delayed treatment, drug errors, hospital wait times and lost the confidence and funding. To address those issues, improve services, and rebuild trust, the leaders had to examine their mission and focused to their vision. They would have to recommitted and cultivated an atmosphere of goodwill to provide exemplary service; they established policies, procedures, and guidelines that reflected the goal of doing no harm and providing superior care to patients. Ethical and behavioral changes were required by leaders and followers to guarantee patients are treated with dignity, respect, receive exceptional care, and have their rights fully protected. The leaders recognized the need to accepting responsibility and assigned accountability; they would have to work on restoring the confidence of the followers in their ability to improve operations that would result in excellent patient service. They knew they could regained the trust of all concerned by demonstrating excellent care and ethical competence, so the organization and citizens were protected. Stakeholders would be satisfied with performance (Johnstone, 2013).
