Problem: Dr. Frommer conducts a study testing whether a new drug developed to treat generalized anxiety disorder works better than the usual treatment of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The participants are randomly assigned to either the drug condition or the CBT condition. After 4 weeks of treatment, the participants complete the Generalized Anxiety Test (GAT). The data reveal that the participants in the drug condition had lower GAT scores (i.e., less anxiety) than the participants in the CBT condition did. Dr. Frommer concludes that the new drug caused reduced anxiety. In this study, the operational definition of the independent variable is: anxiety. treatment type. the score on the Generalized Anxiety Test (GAT). the new drug versus cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
