Probation system is intended to serve as an alternative

Problem: Respond to classmate in 80 words. The probation system is intended to serve as an alternative to incarceration; however, it often falls short when underlying root factors such as mental health and substance use disorders are not properly addressed. In researching this topic, I believe that although probation reinforces accountability, it can also become a setup for failure when individuals are expected to meet strict conditions without effective support. This view is shaped by lived experience. A close family member of mine was placed on probation and struggled due to untreated mental health issues and substance use disorder. Since there was no early intervention, they accumulated violations, ultimately failed probation, and were rearrested. It wasn't until they were sent to a substance abuse treatment facility designed specifically for individuals under felony community supervision that progress began. While placed in the Texas Department of Corrections facility, they participated in a substance dependency curriculum with cognitive-behavioral components during an intensive nine-month tiered program. After completing that program, they transitioned to a residential transitional treatment center, where consistent structure and support helped them stabilize. With treatment in place, they completed the remainder of their community supervision. Based on my firsthand experience and research for this class, I believe that probation is most effective when treatment is prioritized over. Need Assignment Help?
