When the anxiety interferes with daily life

Assignment Problem: For some it is unfocused apprehension, while for others it is extreme fear or even panic. Anxiety can also be defined on a continuum from realistic to irrational to delusional. In general, the anxiety disorders are distinguished by (1.) whether there is a specific and identifiable stimulus associated with the appearance of the anxiety/fear, and (2.) whether the symptoms reflect behaviors intended to avoid the fear or they are a reaction to fear inducing stimuli that are currently present. Anxiety is also a part of life cannot be entirely avoided--nor should it be. The discussion question concerns how one knows when the experience of anxiety is sufficient to label it as a disorder. Here's an example for you.  Bruce has suffered from phobias for many years. He can't drive or walk over bridges that are more than about 50 yards long, he can't stand too close to any precipice that is over 20 feet high (he hates those open glass elevators at the Hyatt Hotels!), and he is plagued with homichlophobia (look this one up). Is Bruce experiencing too much anxiety and needs therapy?  Certainly, he can be diagnosed. How do you know when someone is experiencing too much anxiety and needs help?  Please don't take the easy way out and just say "when the anxiety interferes with daily life". Try to be specific. How does it have to interfere?  For how long?  etc.  What do you think?
