Post
The attack at Boulder, Colorado's Pearl Street Mall, spread nationwide like wildfire, but it was felt deeply in Colorado itself. Many of us were in shock, unable to grasp how someone without a criminal record-who appeared to be a good husband, father, and person-could commit such an act. On June 1, 2025, Mohamed Sabry Soliman targeted pro-Israel supporters at an event calling for the release of Gaza hostages (Colorado Judicial, 2025). Soliman, an Egyptian citizen, aimed to fight for "his people" with incendiary devices, expressing the desire to "kill all Zionist people" to support Palestine (Cann & Trethan, 2025). He had tried to buy a gun before the incident but was denied because of his citizenship status (Cann & Trethan, 2025). Having entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in August 2022, which later expired, he was granted a work visa. He lived peacefully in the U.S. with his wife and five children, holding a driver's license, paying taxes, until the attack. He had been planning the assault for some time but waited until after his daughter's high school graduation.
Impacts of Diversity
This case has been influenced by culture, race, and religious beliefs. Beyond the offender, Mohamed Soliman, there is a family unaware of the attack until they saw it on the news. Like other victims, they are trying to rebuild their lives here in the U.S., where they had friends, attended school, and integrated into the community. Due to their immigration status and the current climate, they became targets-suspected by the government of involvement. Their family was detained and only recently released after petitions and facing unfair treatment. My sister-in-law, close to the wife and children, motivated me to speak out against this injustice. I signed the petition for their release, knowing they were labeled criminals by association-a sharp contrast to this country's ideals. The case involves both criminal and civil legal issues, all rooted in immigration status, race, ethnicity, and cultural or religious beliefs. Mohamed Soliman committed a wrong, for which he will face justice, but his family is also innocent victims of racial bias and government fear of the unknown. Their lives will be permanently affected by the trauma of his actions and the broader national trauma, with lasting emotional impacts.
Promoting Diversity, Reduced Bias and Catalyst for Positive Social Change
As a forensic psychology professional, I am committed to promoting diversity, combating bias, and fostering positive social change. I will uphold this commitment through education, advocacy, and honest communication whenever possible. Our role grants us influence that many others lack, often providing access to various platforms, such as testifying in court on trauma impacts or training law enforcement. Knowledge is power, but it must be actively used to make an impact.
